Tonometry is a procedure that eye doctors and ophthalmologists perform to determine the pressure of the fluid inside the eyes of the patient. Applanation tonometry is a method in which the intraocular pressure (IOP) is deduced from the force required to applanate, which means to flatten, a constant area of the cornea of the eye. The head of the tonometer comes into contact with the cornea during the process. The applanation tonometer is the most widely used tonometer.

Of all the different tonometries, Goldman tonometry is the one that is the most widely used by ophthalmologists. It is a variation of applanation tonometry. In this method a special disinfected prism is mounted on the head of the tonometer which is placed against the cornea. A cobalt blue filter is then used to view two green semi-circles. And then pressure is applied on the tonometer head using a dial connected to a variable tension spring until the two semi-circles meet. An area of 3.06 millimeters is flattened to measure the IOP.

Dynamic contour tonometry works on a different principle than applanation tonometry but in it also the probe comes into contact with the cornea. It uses the principle of contour matching. The tonometer used in this method called the PASCAL tonometer. The tip of this tonometer contains a hollow which is the same shape as the cornea. The hollow is fitted with a pressure sensor. When the tip comes into contact with the cornea, the sensor begins to acquire data automatically, measuring IOP a hundred times a second.

Goldman tonometry, dynamic contour tonometry, electronic indentation tonometry, rebound tonometry, pneumatonometry and impression tonometry have one thing in common with applanation tonometry. They are all contact tonometry, which means their probes come into contact with the surface of the cornea during the process. Because of this they require the application of topical anesthetic before the process to numb the eye.

Non-contact tonometry, non-corneal and transpalpebral tonometry and OCT tonometry are similar in that they are all non-contact tonometry. This means that their probes do not come into contact with the cornea. Because of this these tonometries are ideal for children and non-compliant patients.

Non-contact tonometry, also called air-puff tonometry, is a variation of applanation tonometry. It uses a rapid air pulse to applanate (flatten) the cornea. IOP is then estimated by deducing the force of the jet of air at the time of applanation. Non-corneal and Transpalpebral tonometry uses a different principle. It measures the IOP through the eyelid. It uses a tonometer called the Diaton non-corneal tonometer. This method, however, is not as accurate as other more established methods.
